Scout Network

At last – a Scout Network for Don District!!!

A meeting has been arranged to discuss the formation of a Network on Wednesday 9th July, 7.30pm at the Meeting Room at Hesley Wood.

(That’s to the left of the main reception if you didn’t know)

Present will be the ACC for Scout Network in South Yorkshire, and a few other people with experience of the Network.

The Network is open to anyone interested in Scouting who is between the ages of 18 and 25; see below for some bits  pinched off the Network pages!

What do Networks do exactly?

Put simply, anything they want! Networks are involved in activities as wide ranging as kayaking, rock climbing, water skiing, international projects in places as inspiring as Chile, Libya and Italy, work with young people and help within the local community... the list of activities, projects and events is almost endless. You can also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh as well as Scout Awards. By joining Scout Network a whole world of opportunity opens up to you. What you and your Network do is up to you.

Can I be a member of Network?

If you are aged between 18-25 then yes, of course you can! Some Network members will also be Leaders, Assistants or part of their local Scout Fellowship. Others will never have been involved in Scouting before – now is the time to start. Once you become a Network member, you can take part in pretty much any activity or event arranged by the 237 Networks there are across the UK.

OK, so how do Networks meet?

Well, Networks’ meeting times are flexible enough to suit their members. There are different types of Network – some meet to serve the needs of an area and take part in a wide variety of activities, whilst
others exist to fulfil certain roles such as a service crew at their local campsite, or concentrate on specific activities such as rock climbing.

Please pass this information on to anyone who you think may be interested, and then TURN UP AT THE MEETING!!

Summer Party

Don’t forget it’s the summer party this weekend – and it’s a ‘pirate’ theme! Meet at Greno HQ at 6pm, there’s a band, disco, party games and a BBQ. We’ll be finished by 10 (hopefully).

There’ll be prizes for the best outfit – and yes I am expecting lots of Johnny Depp look alikes…

Austria Next year!

We’re just starting our planning for next year’s camp – and we’re thinking about going to Austria.

The dates we’re looking at are Sunday 2nd to Wednesday 12th August 2009.

We’ll be stopping in Indoor Accommodation at a Scout Campsite just outside Salzburg. The camp is located next to a warm swimming lake, 1.5 km from the nearest village and 20km from Salzburg itself.

Activities planned include:

  • Swimming
  • Canoeing
  • Rowing
  • Hiking
  • Visits and trips
  • Cycling
  • White water rafting
  • High Ropes Course
  • Canyoning
  • Hydrospeed

We hope to be meeting lots of Scouts from other countries, and will be taking part in the ‘Environment’ and ‘Friendship’ badges. We’ll be doing a lot of hiking and cycling in the immediate vicinity of the campsite, visiting local attractions such as lakes, swimming pools and villages.

This time we intend to fly instead of using a coach; after last year can you blame us? We’re going for 10 nights instead of the usual 6 nights plus 3 days on a coach, so we reckon we’re getting good value for money.

The fully inclusive cost will be somewhere in the region of £550-£650; this depends on airfare costs. We will probably travel down to Stansted and fly directly to Salzburg; at the moment these are the cheapest fares - over £120 less than flying from Manchester even allowing for a coach hire to and from the airport. If airfares rise dramacticly in the next few months we do have the option of travelling by coach...

We are JUST gauging initial interest at the moment; we’re not collecting money yet! If you are interested in going can you let us know by next ASAP? If we get enough interest to go ahead we will require an initial deposit of £20, followed by another £30 a month later. A payment schedule will follow after that. Places will be strictly limited to 45!

Free Meal

Free Meal!!!!!!!

Yes you can get a free meal – just by helping out at Grenoside Scout and Guides Group Treasure Hunt and BBQ. We need help with the cooking team, and manning the bouncy castle I hope to borrow.

It’s on Saturday 5th July, starting at 6.30pm, finishing around 9.30pm.

Of course you can go on the Treasure Hunt if you wish; tickets are £5 but you won’t get a free meal!

Photo Fun

We set the Explorers the task of acting out some scenes for a photo competition;

All the team off the ground, a love scene, changing of the guard, Snow White and the seven dwarves etc. See the results below...

St. George's Camp

A big thank you to everyone who helped out at the St. George’s Celebrations. Running bases for the Cubs, directing traffic in the car park (3 times!) and running bases for the Scouts on their night hike meant that some of you had one hectic weekend...

Thanks also are due to those of you who turned up for the Campfire and renewal of Promise – especially if you volunteered for the ‘Lappa’ dance with Dave J - well done Frankie and Sarah!

I’ll upload the video later J

T-shirts

A few weeks ago I emailed everyone asking you for designs for a Unit t-shirt/polo shirt/sweatshirt.

To date I have had just 4 designs, 2 each from 2 people!

And one that I put on there myself…

If you want a design to be considered then can you do something about it!

All the designs I’ve received so far are available to view below.

If you like one of these then let me know, or send me one yourself!

Crewboree

To answer a question I’ve been asked by several of you:

Yes we are going on the Crewboree this year!

But before you start getting really excited, there are a few things to keep in mind…

1)       It will cost at least £28 to attend

2)      It’s in the middle of the GCSE Exam period, so if you’re in Y11, there are a few things to think about:

a)      If you’ve got an exam the Monday after you’d better not attend

b)      If you’ve got an exam the Tuesday or Wednesday after you will have to think hard about going, and what is more important (little hint: it’s your exams!).

c)      On the other hand, if you haven’t got any exams immediately after it may provide a welcome break.

d)      There is no discount if you only want to come for part of the weekend – the organizers are really inflexible about this, I’ve already asked!

3)      If you feel you are a little bit old for all this now, there is the opportunity to join the crew for the weekend – but they will probably make you work hard. J

Young Leaders Weekend

Just added some photos from the Young Leaders weekend. You can see them below...

St. George's Day

This years St. George’s Day Promise renewal will be during a campfire at Hesley Wood on Saturday 26th April.  Once again we have decided to make a weekend camp out of this event. This year we will be helping at the Beavers and Cubs activities on Saturday, and in the evening either taking helping at, or taking part in, a night hike with incidents run for the Scouts.

March 03

Freezer Camp

Sooooo. Freezer Camp was ‘eventful’. Most of you had a great time, and the Leaders would like to thank you all for your cooperation during the unfortunate incident with Pat on Saturday afternoon. Here’s hoping he makes a rapid and full recovery.

Looks like we’re going to have to take ‘SingStar’ on every camp from now on! Stars on there included Pam, who obviously practises every night, and Ben, who just seems to know the lyrics of every song on there… Combat Barbies, stupid hats, tutus, tents flying around in the wind – they all add to the fun of a typical Freezer Camp!

There are some pictures I took on Saturday morning on the website; Johns got some as well, including some video footage I’ll try and get on here.

Young Leaders

Congratulations to all the Young leaders who took part in last week’s training weekend. Everyone is looking forwards to putting their skills into practise after passing with flying colours.

If you are interested in becoming a Young Leader we will be putting another course on for Module 1 later this year; please contact us at:  donex@hotmail.co.uk or via the usual channels.

Camps

All details about this year’s camps can now be found in the ‘FILES’ section below. If you click on ‘Camps and Events’ you’ll be able to find copies of the letters that I have:

  1. Emailed to you all.
  2. Given you hard copies of.
  3. Emailed you again!

At the moment there are details of the Freezer Camp and Summer camp in Wales.

Freezer Camp

Freeeeezer Camp

Don’t forget it’s the Freezer Camp on the 22nd -24th February. Cost for Explorers is £32 each. If you haven’t already paid (the closing date after all was the 31st of January), then let me know as soon as possible. We already have a party of over 50 Scouts, Explorers and Leaders going so a few more will not be a problem…

Next Years Summer Camp

I’ve added some photos of the camp site we’re intending to use for next years summer camp. It’s in Pembrokeshire, South Wales, and is just 150 metres from a small beach!

Activities we hope to put on include coasteering, climbing, hiking, a surfing lesson, body-boarding, swimming, kite flying, fishing and a day trip to Oakwood theme park.

More details, including an estimated cost and links to relevant web sites will appear shortly.

PS we will be sleeping in tents, the cottages in the photos are only for cooking in…

For all those of you who are new to the movement, I've added a page to the 'General' folder below, showing you where to put your badges.

Welcome

Welcome to the Don District Explorers web site.  Hopefully this will be an interim solution until I manage to persuade someone to design us a proper site!
On here you should be able to find details of activities and camps that are coming up, what we'll be doing on Thursday night meetings and any thing relevevant that I can think of...
